3. Good Better Best
If you’re here you are likely working hard to create a better environment for your body so that you may achieve better health outcomes or you are willing to start and looking for guidance so the path forward is successful and enjoyable.
Making changes to diet and lifestyle can be daunting even as it is completely rewarding. As you make sustainable changes, I recommend following the “Good, Better, Best” rule. You can always achieve what is good. Don’t give up because there are times when you can’t do what’s better or best. If you’re willing and able to do a good thing but not the best thing, then the good thing IS the best thing.
Beating yourself up over missteps in your journey is the antithesis of healing. Negativity will not promote healing; it will hinder it. When negativity creeps in we often don’t notice right away. Once you notice it, you have already taken the first important step. It’s hard to change something you aren’t aware you’re doing! Now you can work those thoughts out. Remind yourself that you are taking steps to improve your life and it takes time. Remind yourself that your body is powerful and that you’re taking the proper steps to unleash its full potential. Tell your body you are grateful for it and that you are happy to be working hard at removing obstacles hindering your healing. Take a few deep breaths to help you relax. When you fall short forgive yourself and commit to doing better. You can get back on track right that minute, you don’t need to wait until morning or next month, just recommit right then and as often as necessary until you form new habits. Love your body, love your life. Love the journey. Kindness, love, and patience will unlock your healing power.
As you implement new actions and habits, be sure to take note of all the small wins you achieve through the day. Noting these wins is encouraging! It will help you replace negativity with reasons to be proud of yourself and happy with your actions.
Over time, improving your lifestyle will begin to feel easy. You will be inclined to make changes without external provocation. You’ll do it because you like to, you will do it with intrinsic motivation. For now, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Know that this is a journey and not a destination.
In the end, you are the one who gains the most from these good choices. You will feel happier, lighter, and more confident. You will prove that you can do hard things. Hard things will even start to feel easy. You will be endlessly rewarded. It will be easy to love your life and yourself.
